WHOIS and RDAP lookup

Domain registration data straight from the official registry: registrar, dates, status and name servers.

RDAP and whois

RDAP is the newer of the two protocols. It returns a structured answer, and the list of servers comes from IANA, so the data is read from the registry that actually holds the domain. For the endings that have no RDAP service yet, .lv among them, the classic whois protocol is used instead.

The tool always shows which of the two answered and which server the answer came from, so a thin or unusual result can be traced back to its source.

Why the contact details are hidden

Since the data protection rules came into force, most registries no longer publish the contact details of private individuals. What stays public is the registration and expiry dates, the domain status, the registrar and the name servers. For companies, part of the registries still publish the name of the holder.

Where the contacts are withheld, many registries publish an anonymised relay address or a web form instead, and a request for the real data goes through the registrar.

Frequently asked questions

What does the status clientTransferProhibited mean?

The domain is locked against transfer. It is a normal safety setting that most registrars switch on by default, and it has to be removed before a transfer to another registrar can start.

How do I find out when a .lv domain expires?

The NIC.lv whois answer carries the expiry date for part of the domains only. The reliable place is the control panel of the registrar the domain is kept with.

Does whois show who owns the website?

Not always. It shows the registrant of the domain, which can be a different party from whoever runs the content, and for private individuals those fields are usually redacted.

What do redemptionPeriod and pendingDelete mean?

The domain has expired. In redemptionPeriod it is out of the zone, but the registrar can still restore it, normally for an extra fee. In pendingDelete that window has closed and the name is on its way back to the pool. How long each stage lasts is set by the registry.
